I love Chick Lit…don’t you?

Chick Lit

A quick look at Wikipedia tells us that chick lit is a term used to denote genre fiction within women’s fiction written for and marketed to young women, especially single, working women in their twenties and thirties. Chick lit is very popular, with chick lit titles topping bestseller lists and the creation of imprints devoted entirely to chick lit. It generally deals with the issues of modern women humorously and lightheartedly.

Although usually including romantic elements, chick lit is generally not considered a direct subcategory of the romance novel genre, because in women’s fiction the heroine’s relationship with her family or friends may be equally as important as her relationship with the hero.

Chick lit features hip, stylish, career-driven female protagonists, usually in their twenties and thirties. The women featured in these novels may be obsessed with appearance or have a passion for shopping.

The setting is generally urban and the plot usually follows the characters’ love lives and struggles for professional success (often in the publishing, advertising, public relations, or fashion industry). The style is usually of an airy, irreverent tone and includes frank sexual themes. It frequently makes use of current slang and cliches.

Think Bridget Jones’ Diary, Sex and the City, The Devil Wears Prada, and, of course, The Secret Life of a Shopaholic.

For me, chick lit is nothing but an irrisitable , fu, can’t-put-down read.  I love nothing more than curling up with a new novel by one of my favourite chick lit authors.

Recommend me a nice romance-humored book please? With summary…?

No nicholas spark.. Not too corny and hopefully not too much unrealistic drama. I love books about vampires, highschool…. I want something lighthearted and young. I don’t mind chiclit…

Rebecca Paisley-A basket of wishes.
Its about a fairy Splendour who is ordered to marry a human( a duke).The poor hero is confused by the woman who will shrink if not kissed regularly,drinks apricot face lotion.On top of that he is harassed by splendour’s sister who even turns him into a snail.His cousin Emil thinks that Splendour is exactly what the doctor ordered for the staid ,boring Jordan.

Mary Balogh-Lady with a black umbrella(Funny romance).The heroine is always rescuing the hero-whether he wants to be rescued or not.

Lynsay Sands-A bride promises her father that she’ll obey her husband ‘always’.I mean ‘always’.The poor groom didn’t know what he was going to get when he was coarced to marry the king’s daughter.

Anne Gracie-The perfect rake.The heroine just wants to save her sisters from their abusive grand father.However one lie led to another and another.The hero was perfectly willing to go along with the charades.

For a really funny vampire romance books read Argeneau book series by Lynsay Sands.The first one of the lot is ‘Single white vampire’.Recluse vampire and novelist Lucern Argeneau finds his lair being invaded by his determined editor Kate.He has to hide the fact that he is a vampire from Kate,partake his daily blood quota and manage his family.His interfering all-vampire family doesn’t make things easier.Infact his mom thinks that Kate is perfectly suitable for him.

Dark Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon.The books provide an alternate take on vampires.People who are unjustly murdered call upon Artemis(Greek goddess) and she grants them a day to avenge themselves.After that they are recruited to her army to fight against evil.These are romance novels.Best of the series are ‘Dance with the devil’ and ‘Seize the night’.

Prime vampire novels by Susan Sizemore is interesting.The best of the lot is the 4th book ‘Master of Darkness.’ Reluctant vampire hunter Eden Faveau thinks Laurent is her new partner in an investigation to take down a local vampire drug ring. Laurent is really a renegade vampire from the Tribe Manticore and he is in the right place at the right time to take advantage of Eden. He needs her computer expertise to hack a laptop that he stole from the Tribe leader, Justinian.

Book Suggestions for my beach reading!?

Going to the beach for a week, I’m looking to read a ton, I’m looking for some good chiclit, & science fiction. Fantasy is ok, but I prefer technology to wizards and warlocks. I’ve read the obvious popular stuff like LOTR and Harry.

my current favorite series/titles are

The Vatta Wars - Elizabeth Moon
Ender Series - Orson Scott Card
Temeraire - Naomi Novik
The Devil Wears Prada - Weisberger
Artemis Fowl
The Eyre Affair - Jasper Fforde

I love Sophie Kinsella books, which are chick lit. She writes light romantic comedies that are easy to read and are real page-turners. They always have happy endings, which I really like in a book. My favorite was Remember Me? which is about a woman who gets amnesia and forgets the previous three years of her life. The good side is when she wakes up, her life is apparently perfect, although she soon finds out that it’s not as great as it seems. It’s probably one of my favorite books.

I’ve read a few of Jennifer Weiner’s books, and liked them. I think you could call them chick lit as well. I really enjoyed Good in Bed, which is a good read, but a bit heavier than Sophie Kinsella. Good in Bed starts out with Cannie Shapiro reading an article in a magazine written by her ex called "Loving a Larger Woman," which leads Cannie to reflect on her life and make changes for the better.

I loved Dedication by Nicola Kraus and Emma McLaughlin, who wrote The Nanny Diaries, which is also good. Dedication is about a girl who sees her high school boyfriend after ten years apart. In the meantime, the boyfriend has become a rock star and has made songs about their relationship. They find out that they still have underlying feelings for each other, but the ending is a surprise. It’s also really funny!

I also loved the Sookie Stackhouse series by Charlaine Harris. It’s more of a mystery series and deals with supernatural characters. The show True Blood is based on it. I guess it’s kind of fantasy, but I think it’s more of a mystery. The series is really easy to read and very engaging.

I’m trying to think of good science fiction books that I’ve read… Have you tried the Maximum Ride series by James Patterson? I really liked those books a lot! They’re about a group of teenagers who have been genetically experimented on and now have wings and can fly, as well as have other powers. And throughout the series, they’re trying to escape the scientists who created them. It’s really great.
